THE BIG BANG THEORY – BRINGING OUT THE GEEK IN ALL OF US

A week ago I was in my local HMV looking for something new to watch and become obsessed with (something that hasn’t happened since Scrubs…..and Red Dwarf……and Blackadder……and many more but moving on). It was during my random rummage through the comedy section that I stumbled upon the first series/season of The Big Bang Theory for only 8 of my British pounds. This find was too good to be true. You may say that it was my destiny to find this DVD at such a reasonable rate (or you may say I am exaggerating, well……SHAME ON YOU)

The Big Bang Theory is in my opinion the funniest American comedy since Scrubs as it has the amazing good fortune of having humour that translates over here in the UK as well as being an obvious American comedy. The comedy is a hit because it explores that side of us that we all know exists but try to hide by sweeping it under the rug of acceptability. I am of course talking about the nerd inside all of us. Ok it may not be everyone I am talking about but we all harbour our own socially shameful secrets and lie about secret loves such as sci-fi and comics. And yet Avengers Assemble is one of the biggest hits of the year and one of the best films I have ever seen (based on the comics by Marvell – Geeks 1-World 0) and we all do impressions of Darth Vader and Yoda (Geeks 2-World 0) and so on into further detail and more explanations that put us all to shame (Geeks 10-World 0)

Funniest Character: Howard Wollowitz – The character is simply a genius. The lines he is given are pure gold are and acted out perfectly by the very talented Simon Helberg. His optimism and determination with the ladies is to be admired and respected (debateable?) and his comic timing and perfect delivery are what makes this comedy so special in my eyes. I laughed for ages when Howard tells Penny how beautiful she is in flawless Russian, perfect delivery and this was only episode 2

Conclusion: One of the funniest comedies in a long time and I imagine will be one of the best for years to come. The well-crafted characters have given the writers plenty of avenues in order to explore different comedic scenarios and, as long as they stick to the same formula, this comedy will not get stale

So far I have polished off series 1-3 and watched several of the final episodes of series 5 on E4, not bad for a week’s work (thank god I just finished my second year of uni)
